As the world’s largest producer of wooden toys, Hape is clearly dependent on the use of natural materials. A full line of bamboo toys takes advantage of the special properties of this highly renewable material. Plastic parts are ensured durable enough to last for generations in order to encourage toys to be passed down rather than tossed out.
Hape has strategically considered surface treatment, energy consumption, and packaging options to minimize environmental impact and maximize efficiency.
Hape has introduced key processes to ensure that the variety of by-products produced cause minimal impact to the environment. A water purification system utilizes limited or no chemicals to release the cleansed water back into circulation.
Hape buys materials globally and sells to over 60 countries. Locating the Hape factory only 3km from the Beilun Harbor, one of the largest ports in the world, created transportation as well as ecological advantages.
Educating suppliers and neighbors about the advantages of sustainability and responsible handling of resources ensures that the practices will multiply. Hape is intimately connected to local as well as global communities. On-going technical assistance programs have helped rural communities create sustainable local economies. Hape has built 3 schools in rural Guizhou, providing opportunities for playing and learning for around 10,000 children and their families.
In 2016, as a tribute to Hape’s 30th Anniversary, the global charity program “We Care We Share” - initiated by Hape - was launched. For each set of BLOCKS purchased, one toy is donated to a child in need in Syria, Zimbabwe, Afghanistan, Nepal, Greece or to an autistic child in China. From then until now, the “We Care We Share” program has continued to make donations through non-profit associations like the China Toy & Juvenile Products Association and the Beilun Charity Association, as well as to children in poverty-stricken regions, children’s hospitals, autism rehabilitation centres, kindergartens, refugee camps, ECCD centres and public welfare parks around the globe. The program will continue to run in the future in a variety of impactful ways.
Since 2018, entrusted by the local Education Bureau, Hape has co-run the Access International Academy, which is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and covers curriculum from Kindergarten through to High School. This is a remarkable step for Hape into the world of education and proof that Hape shoulders the responsibility of contributing to society writ large. Children represent our future, a future that can be brightened by good-education, which is why Hape makes education a top priority.

Hape Toys is one of the world’s largest producers of toys made from sustainable materials. Hape toys are both creatively designed and eco-friendly. Neither culture, nor language, nor gender inhibits the intuitive process of play. All of the products meet, and more often, exceed the strictest international standards for quality and safety. But behind the innovative designs and meticulous quality lies the even stronger ethos of Hape.
From the beginning of the design process, through production and delivery, to the final unwrapping of the consumer packaging, Hape toys are a collaboration of global thinking and responsible ecology.
In addition to using particular materials and methods, Hape seeks out people who bring a new sensibility to the process. A collaboration of international and local employees creates a global corporate culture with a particular understanding and respect for the world in which we live. Sustainability, education, innovation and fun. Hape Toys represents the next generation of play.
To be the most influential children’s products enterprise in the world.
Dear to our heart, we believe:
Love is the mutual love between child and parent,
Play is the experience of success or failure,
Learn is the natural outcome from love and play.
Deep in our hearts, we believe that play is the most important thing for children all over the world. Germany invented the word and the concept “Kindergarten”, and if children learn true play, they will have deeper understanding of many things in life and therefore become better adults in the future.
Integrity, Care, Responsibility, Innovation, Passion.
Hape’s story begins with Peter Handstein’s story. Peter grew up in a rural town in central Germany, where he was raised with a deep rooted respect for family, honesty, compassion, and a love of nature. Hape is a reflection of Peter’s lifelong values. Peter began his career as a salesman for an educational toy company servicing German kindergartens. Visiting hundreds of schools and talking with hundreds of educators gave him a unique understanding of the power of play. In 1986, Peter formed Hape Kindergarten Supply with his sister, Sabine, and their close friend, Renate Gies.
This significantly increased Hape’s size. However, the partners knew that in order to be recognized outside of Germany, they would have to grow internationally. With his trademark vision and determination, Peter embarked on the next phase of Hape’s growth, strategically expanding the company country by country. In 1995, due to expansion of the business, he expanded to Ningbo, China, where he created an innovative factory embracing ecological, technological, and efficiency practices.
Intrigued by the bamboo plants surrounding his new home, Peter encouraged his designers to experiment with this highly renewable resource. This led to an alliance with UNESCO and the first full line of bamboo toys in 2005. The Hape bamboo collection now holds its place along with Hape Eco-toys and Hape line to make up the total Hape brand.
Today, Hape Toys is a multifaceted, multinational company selling toys in over 60 countries. But Peter’s ideals extend far beyond creating safe, innovative products. A lifetime commitment to learning and education, led him to work with local communities educating their children by building schools and enhancing their lives by teaching them to use available resources. Social responsibility, education, ecology, and innovation are ingrained in Peter’s heritage, and are reflected in every aspect of the Hape business, past, present, and future.
